I've found a vehicle in New Hampshire that intrigues me . . . but was wondering if there were any negatives/positives?
You can't avoid the tax if that is what you are asking. Beyond that, there is no reason you shouldn't consider buying out of state. Lots of times certain makes and models are cheaper due to the supply and demand across the border.
Kind of figured Maine would want a cut . . . how does it work though . . . instead of paying the sales tax at the point of sale you pay the sales tax when you register the vehicle?
Yes. Just like when you buy a used car in Maine, you don't pay the person making the sale the tax, you pay when you register.
For private party you use the bill of sale, from a dealer you use the form they give you. Not much difference than in Maine. If it's private party you have some room to "alter" the agreed upon price if the seller is so willing to in the bill of sale.
I will use caution doing that now, as the state is getting crafty and verifying anything that is too far out of tolerance from say NADA. They have this new data base from what I have been told that puts in the registered vehicles price and then runs a check and anything say under 20% of NADA gets an investigations(phone call). Know 3 people that it has happened to recently.....
