Never having done so . . . is there any advantage to buying a vehicle in New Hampshire vs. Maine . . . conversely . . . are there any negatives . . . I've found a vehicle in New Hampshire that intrigues me . . . but was wondering if there were any negatives/positives?

You can't avoid the tax if that is what you are asking. Beyond that, there is no reason you shouldn't consider buying out of state. Lots of times certain makes and models are cheaper due to the supply and demand across the border.

Kind of figured Maine would want a cut . . . how does it work though . . . instead of paying the sales tax at the point of sale you pay the sales tax when you register the vehicle?

Yes. Just like when you buy a used car in Maine, you don't pay the person making the sale the tax, you pay when you register.
For private party you use the bill of sale, from a dealer you use the form they give you. Not much difference than in Maine. If it's private party you have some room to "alter" the agreed upon price if the seller is so willing to in the bill of sale.

I will use caution doing that now, as the state is getting crafty and verifying anything that is too far out of tolerance from say NADA. They have this new data base from what I have been told that puts in the registered vehicles price and then runs a check and anything say under 20% of NADA gets an investigations(phone call). Know 3 people that it has happened to recently.....

I got a heck of a deal on an 03 Ram 2500 from Florida last fall.  No rust is a beautiful thing.  Looks like it's only a couple years old.
It was 30% under book and I didn't have any issues registering it but that was back in December.  But yes- the state will get their cut sooner or later  Wink

It's not when you register, it's when the state gets around to looking at the past registrations. I got called a sled 1.5 years after I sold it.

I learned a neat trick when buying from a family member, if you have them make a Bill of Sale saying its a gift no sales tax applies! Nice trick to know Wink

TB got called on the '04 REV he sold me a few years back just last season.  I save everything, so I still had the bill of sale to prove the purchase price.  The state was curious though.  TB just gave a brother in need a good deal Wink
