I have a 2000 6.5 xcab with 260k miles on it.  Gm and stanadyne had some big issues with the early versions (96,97) versions of the injection pumps that tainted the reputation of the motors, but by 2k, they had it all worked out.

Pros: cheap parts cost, most body and drivetrain interchange with the gas models, used parts and aftermarket are in abundance
Oil changes are easy and inexpensive (compared to cummins and powerstroke)
Good maintenance will get you long service life

Cons:  pmd module on pump needs to be moved out of engine compatment (easy to do)
Not as powerful as cummins or ford
not as many aftermarket upgrades available

With 114 on the odo, you may need to have the injection pump rebuilt in 30-40 k miles.
Part sand info:  heath diesel
Ssdiesel supply
6.5 forums

I'll add more info and links tonight.

I too would like to upgrade to the Duramax, but I've had my 6.5 since 02, it's paid for, easy on insurance, and I'm getting a constant 17 mpg mixed city and highway.   All highway driving, I've had up to 22 mpg (wind at my back, very little load, and 65 mph cruise setting).

Was just looking atone last night at Bill Dodge in Westbrook 08 w/ 17k miles with a few scratchs on the bumper. It was enough damage to come up on car fax?? They are asking $44. I think they want too mmuch since the 11's are coming out in a month.

I think I am gonna go for it. Its still for sale. All I need to do is sell the Jeep now... He wants 6500 for it, I haven't test driven it yet but I have seen it and its in great shape. Do you think its worth what he wants?

Find out if the injection pump has been redone.   I know GM extended the warranty to something like 140K/11 years because of all of the issues they had with 96/97's.  I'm not sure if it covered the 00's though.

6500 is about 1000 over the base price KBB value.  Probably why it hasn't sold.  If it looks good/drives well without a hesitation while driving (stumble at highway speed is a tell tale sign of injection/pmd issues) try talking him down some.

Sold the Jeep!!! He now wants 6 for it. I'm up at the lake but dads going to go and look at it tomorrow and bring it to our mechanic (he owns two of them) KBB on it is 6,555... Will I regret it though? Does it have any "balls"? A friend of mine works at Wymans Auto Body and they have a 97 wrecker that has the 6.5 and he says it is numb. I can imagine there will be a difference between a wrecker and a pickup but am I going to have issues pulling a 2 place enclosed sled trailer? Will it pull our 4 place enclosed? How about our 20' Stingray bow rider?? I want something I can take to move these things and that's the main reason I sold the Jeep.

All the 6.5's are a little numb. You could pick up a 00 with the 5.3 and probably get 100 more HP as well as torque.

If he want's 6k, he'll probably take 5500 or 5 if you put cash out in front of him.

These trucks don't have the power the Duramax, Cummins or Powerstroke 7.3 put out, but they'll haul a 2 place or boat without trouble at highway speed.   I towed a VW golf (3300lbs curb weight) plus everything I owned piled in the back and front from Colorado to California, over mountain passes, without issue.  50-55 up the pass no problem.  The weakest point will be the transmission.

Do your research and if you're happy with the vehicle and the price, buy it.

I just want something that will get me down the road. The Jeep going up hills on 295 was to the floor in 4th gear (5 speed) and it would only do 55 mph and its embarrassing when you pass someone going straight then when your halfway up a hill that same person blows by you.

The boat we only haul twice a year to camp and home other then that it stays in the water.

My parents have never owned a Diesel since I have been around so I don't know to much about comparing them to gas engine but my Mom's Suburban with the 5.3 will pull the 4 place at 65 MPH down the highway without a problem. You know its there but it will do it. So I am thinking it is going to be comparable to the 4.8 or older 5.0.

My only other big issue it that its only a regular cab. I can use my Mom's Suburban whenever I want if I need to haul people around but I was really hoping to find a Extended Cab.
