Question on Bogie Wheels
07/13/09 at 1:48pm

Had a question on bogie wheels...

Got the sled summerized ('08 Polaris IQ - 600, M10 suspension) and they replaced two bogie wheels.
Wondering if my riding did something to make them go so quick....
I have a studded track so I don't think it's a lubrication problem, given the winter we just had....

I did feel a few bottom-outs in March - wanted the shocks checked out to make sure they were good - so nothing wrong there.

My rear suspension is tweaked up a bit so I was surprised I bottomed out... could have been trail conditions, too....

Any thoughts?

If the backs of your studs (on the inside of the track) make contact with the idler wheels when the track is spinning the rubber around the outsides of the wheels will wear out prematurely.

Thanks, Blazin..... I have my track studded down the middle only - will what you said still apply?
Just want to adjust my ridin' if it's something I may be doing wrong.... ya know?

When I looked at the replaced bogies - the rubber did look cracked/aged a bit....

Was it the inner set of idler wheels?

Adjusting your riding style probably isn't going to change the wear rate of the rubber on the wheels.  Studs, ice, heat/friction will wreak havoc on them.  And it is usually the inner front idlers that take the abuse.  Could be a problem with that particular rubber compound, or perhaps there is a lot of pressure there due to mounting location, but on my Pro-X, the same thing happened.

I was wondering the same thing......my BOGIE wheels have held up fine on all my sleds but Cats idler wheels are lucky to see 2000 miles.  I've replaced the front idlers on both F8's.  Junk/cheap rubber.  Bearings were ok though.  Pretty sure Polaris/Cat use the same idler wheels.

Yes, that would still apply.  As was mentioned by OTE, the inner idler wheels up front were probably the ones they replaced.  I go through a bunch on the Cat as well, Shane.  Well, I did when the Cat ran anyway.

Ya, it wasn't bad when the wheels were like $16.  I think I paid $35 each last winter!
